Full-Slice Elm Dining Table

UK-sourced timber · Material-led fabrication · One-off furniture

A 3.5-metre dining table cut from a single piece of British elm. The material dictated the design. Built once, unrepeatable.

CONCEPT

Large, single-slice timber tables require the material itself to dictate both scale and structure. A rare slice of British elm was selected to form the basis of a dining table intended to act as the centrepiece of the room.

The supporting structure needed to acknowledge the weight and presence of the timber without competing visually with the wood itself.

DESIGN

The design was led entirely by the material. Full-slice elm of this size is uncommon, so waste was kept to a minimum, with only essential shaping undertaken to achieve a level and usable surface.

The natural form, grain, and irregularities of the timber were preserved rather than refined away.

REALITY

The finished table functions as a single, substantial object within the space. Its scale and character are defined by the timber itself, resulting in a one-off piece that cannot be replicated.

A hard-wearing protective finish allows the table to be used daily without additional coverings. Ongoing maintenance requirements remain minimal despite the table’s size and natural construction.
