We’re JRDF — a small but mighty family-run fabrication studio where art, engineering, and technology collide. From sci-fi ships to autonomous race cars, we turn bold ideas into real-world creations.

Here’s a taste of what we’re working on right now:

  • Cloud Imperium Games – For over eight years, we’ve been building full-scale replicas of in-game environments (sci-fi ship interiors, event showpieces) and manufacturing highly detailed scale models for merchandise.

  • AIPEX Autonomous Racing – As the first privately owned autonomous race team, AIPEX trusts us to project-manage and fabricate their race cars — and arrange their international testing.

  • Plus a variety of unique, one-off projects that demand creativity, precision, and problem-solving.

What You’ll Do

We’re looking for two multi-skilled makers who are comfortable wearing many hats in a workshop environment. Whether you’ve got 3+ years of professional experience or you’ve been building ambitious personal projects in your spare time, this is a chance to make it your day job.

You’ll be fabricating, problem-solving, and collaborating with our small but highly skilled team to bring unusual, complex builds to life.

Essential Skills (you should have at least two)

CNC Operation

  • Set up, operate, and maintain CNC machines to produce precision wood components, both 2D sheet work and 3D carved elements

  • Adjust machine parameters and tooling for accuracy and efficiency

  • Monitor production and make adjustments to meet quality and project specifications

  • Carry out routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting

Scenic Finishing

  • Prepare and finish scenic components using the correct products and techniques

  • Work closely with designers and fabricators to achieve the intended artistic vision

  • Ensure all work is durable and fit for transport, installation, and use in varied environments

Scenic Artistry

  • Apply paint, spray finishes, textures, and distressing to achieve realistic or stylised effects

  • Handle both fine detail work for models and large-scale scenic painting for immersive sets

  • Ensure all pieces meet quality standards and withstand transport and installation

Electrical Fitting (including soldering)

  • Install LED tape, wiring, and other electrical components within builds

  • Prepare power, distribution, and control boards for installations

  • Carry out PAT testing to required standards

3D Printing

  • Operate SLA and FDM printers, including preparing digital files and orienting models

  • Post-process prints (cleaning, curing, sanding) ready for paint or integration into projects

  • Maintain and clean equipment, scheduling prints for complex builds

Desirable Skills (these will strengthen your application)

Bench Joinery / Carpentry

·       Fabricate and assemble wooden components using hand and power tools

·       Work to precise measurements and finishes in line with project specifications

·       Apply knowledge of tools, materials, and techniques to bring creative concepts to life

Casting / Mould-making / Fibreglass

·       Prepare masters, produce moulds, and cast in a range of materials

·       Carry out fibreglass work for structural or decorative purposes

·       Clean up and prepare casts for finishing

Welding / Metalwork

·       Select the right welding method for each job

·       Weld components accurately and safely

·       Inspect and test welds for strength and finish

CAD Design / CAM Programming

·       Produce or adapt CAD files for CNC machining or 3D printing

·       Optimise designs for fabrication and assembly

Graphic Design

·       Create or adapt visuals for print, signage, and installation elements

Event / Shopfitting Installation

·       Install scenic and structural elements on-site for events, exhibitions, and permanent spaces

·       Work to design specifications while ensuring safety and stability

Additional Requirements

Events Installation

·       Work on-site to assemble and install scenic elements, props, and displays

·       Collaborate with the team to solve challenges and meet deadlines during installs

Quality Control

·       Inspect all finished work for accuracy and quality

·       Maintain quality control processes to ensure consistency across projects

Safety and Maintenance

·       Follow all safety protocols, especially when working at heights or with heavy equipment

·       Keep work areas clean and tools properly stored

·       Maintain equipment to ensure safe and effective operation

What You’ll Need

·       At least 3 years’ professional experience or an outstanding personal project portfolio

·       Hands-on ability in at least two of the essential skill areas listed above

·       Full UK driving licence and access to a car (we’re in a rural location)

Skills & Attributes

·       Excellent attention to detail

·       Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure

·       Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

·       Flexible and adaptable to changing project demands

·       Willingness to travel and occasionally work evenings/weekends for projects

Bonus Points For

·       Cross-disciplinary making skills (wood, metal, paint, electronics)

·       Experience in theatre, film, museums, or exhibitions

·       Fine-detail work such as miniature or model-making

Perks & Practical Bits

• Salary: £25,000–£35,000 (DOE, pro rata)

• Hours: 40-hour week, 4 days (Mon–Thu, 8am–6pm)

• Holiday: 28 days including bank holidays

• Pension: Company + employee contributions
